Method: live Google SERPs pulled 2026-10-07 (DataForSEO, mobile) for “smart home installation [city]” in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas and Houston — with “home automation installation [city]” as the qualified term in Phoenix and Houston, where the plain query returned social, job and retail noise instead of contractors. Top 2 non-directory sites per city profiled at source level (titles, metas, H1s, JSON-LD schema, forms, tracking, offers). Phoenix’s plain and qualified organic had zero local integrator sites, so its two map-pack winners with live domains (Camelback Smart Homes, Ideal Automation) were profiled instead. Every claim below names its source site.

1. Two markets are wide open on organic

Los Angeles captured with no map pack at all — an AI Overview sits over 4 directory slots (Angi, Yelp, Thumbtack, Houzz) and a ZipRecruiter page in the top 9. Phoenix’s “home automation installation phoenix” organic has no local integrator whatsoever (gate repair, Instagram, a SmartRent profile, Reddit, Angi, BBB, MapQuest). A single schema-rich money page can take the blue links in both markets with no link equity.

2. Programmatic content machines own the rankings

LA Smart Home Systems runs a 244-URL service × city matrix with unique FAQs and 18 cost guides; Camelback Smart Homes has a 660-URL moat (16 calculators, 330 definitions, 130 FAQs); The Smart Fix Handyman ranks #1 in Dallas on 555 URLs (110 city pages, 65 pricing guides, 22 competitor “versus” pages, 200 project pages with real dollar prices). Meanwhile LA’s #1 (bhsmarthomes.com) is a broken one-page Joomla site — sitemap 404s, /blog and /contact 301 to the homepage — ranking on trade-press authority alone.

3. Price transparency is the rarest weapon

Only 3 of 8 sites publish numbers: Ideal Automation (“single-room packages start around $5,000… full Crestron or Control4 estates fall between $75,000 and $250,000+”), The Smart Fix Handyman ($170 minimum / $145 hr / $95 Smart Scan / $200–400 / $600+ tiers), Secure24 ($55.99 / $63.99 / $69.99 monitoring packages). The PAA box asks “how much” in all four markets — and the luxury integrators all dodge it (“tailored proposal”).

4. Conversion is bimodal — and the luxury side is losing

The integrators ship no booking, no chat, no emergency line: Kore Multimedia’s “Send Us a Message” contact page contains zero forms; Camelback has no LocalBusiness schema and no offers; Beverly Hills Smart Home has no reviews, no license, no guarantees. The funnel operators convert: Secure24 runs a Typeform + interactive “Security System Designer” quiz + fine-print-isolated offer pages, Smart Fix runs multi-step usebasin forms with SMS consent and CallRail DNI, NXT Level pairs Calendly self-scheduling with GoHighLevel call tracking.

5. Map packs are winnable on review velocity alone

Dallas pack #2 “Smart Home Starter” holds its slot on 4.2★ / 5 reviews with no website. Houston’s #3 Home Media Tech holds 5.0★/214 with no website at all — reviews alone carry it. Houston’s bar is a perfect 5.0 with 200+ reviews (NXT 322, Home Media Tech 214, SmartNUP 81); Dallas’ bar is Metroplex Smart Homes 5.0★/95. Review engine first, website second.

Los Angeles

Phoenix

(plain term = junk)
1. Vivint dealer FAQ page · 2–8. Instagram / Houzz (Utah!) / YouTube / Facebook / Yelp (Spokane) — zero local contractor sites. Qualified home automation installation phoenix: pack (above) + organic = gate-repair company, Instagram, SmartRent profile, Reddit, Angi, BBB, MapQuest, Yelp Q&A — again no local integrator organically.
Dallas

1. contractor thesmartfixhandyman.com · 2. contractor koremmsolutions.com · 3. listicle revenuebase.ai · 4. directory Thumbtack · 5. directory Yelp · 6. contractor texadiasystems.com · 7. franchise Mr. Electric · 8. contractor smarthometexas.net · 9. directory MapQuest. PAA: cost, which company, how to automate. Discussions: Facebook groups asking for pre-wiring companies.
Houston
smart home installation houston
+ qualified term
Plain: 1. retailer Lowe’s store page · 2. contractor securehomehouston.com · 3. Reddit · 4. Houzz · 5. contractor thealarmmasters.com · forum / PR / YouTube / LinkedIn. Qualified: pack (above) + alarm.com dealer page, CityLocal101, Trustpilot (houstoncustominstallers.com 4.9★/88), securehomehouston.com, Angi, BBB, Crestron case study.
Headline callouts: (1) LA’s SERP has no map pack — the AI Overview is the new “position 0” and structured FAQ/cost content is how you get cited. (2) Phoenix organic is uncontested — nobody is even trying for the blue links. (3) A Vivint/ADT dealer layer (securehomehouston.com, smartsecurityphoenix.com) buys the top spots in Phoenix and Houston with monitoring-contract economics ($99 install with 36/24-month contract).

Ultimate Smart Home Site Spec

Best-of-every-site spec for the template — each element carries its source. The field’s shared failures are excluded and listed in the Do-Not section.

1. Architecture & URL plan

2. Homepage anatomy (top to bottom)

  1. Sticky phone + primary CTA (“Book a Free Consultation”) — NXT puts the phone in a header utility bar; Smart Fix in a sticky header.
  2. Hero: geo + category H1 + one-line promise (LASS: “Smart Home Automation & Home Theater in Los Angeles”).
  3. Trust strip: license #, dealer credentials, review count (Ideal: “Licensed (AZ ROC #332501)” in the hero band; Smart Fix: “500+ Five-Star Google Reviews”).
  4. Price anchors block (Ideal’s $5k → $250k ladder; Smart Fix’s $170/$200-400/$600+ tiers) — nobody else has it, every PAA asks for it.
  5. Service grid linking to service × city pages.
  6. Process with named deliverables (Ideal’s 6-step, “No allowances, no time-and-materials surprises”).
  7. Live review feed (Camelback’s /reviews Google widget; NXT’s reputationhub iframe).
  8. Financing + membership band.
  9. FAQ (FAQPage schema) → final CTA band → footer with hours, service areas, license.

3. Offer stack

Read the columns: “Published pricing” and “Booking” are the two emptiest columns — and both are pure template work. “Membership” has exactly one exemplar (NXT Perks) — that is the recurring tier, uncontested. “License #” is missing from 5 of 8 including the CA sites.

Next Steps

  1. Template feed: the Ultimate Smart Home Site Spec above becomes the smart-home drop’s build checklist — price-anchor block, license band, real scheduler, FAQPage + LocalBusiness, city pages that name real communities.
  2. Recurring tier input: NXT’s $199/$499 “Perks” membership is the only recurring play in the field — template it (priority scheduling + annual tune-up + review touchpoints).
  3. Content wedge: published cost answers win twice — the PAA box in all 4 cities and the AI Overview citation (LA’s capture had an AI Overview above everything).
  4. Review engine first: Dallas pack #2 runs on 5 reviews and Houston’s #3 has 214 reviews with no website — a review-velocity plan precedes any site work.
  5. Snapshots: SERPs are point-in-time (2026-10-07) — re-pull before comparing across time. Never promise rankings.
